The Marketplace opens on Thursday – bringing more than 20 new options for fresh food, ready-made meals and everyday groceries.

We understand that the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation has created uncertainty for many people in our community. As this unprecedented situation continues to impact our community, we will endeavour to keep you updated and to address your concerns and queries as best we can.

As we prepare to open The Marketplace on Thursday 26th March, we wish to reassure you that the safety and wellbeing of our customers, staff, retailers, and broader community will always be our overriding priority.

This list of Q&As is designed to respond to the most frequent questions that we’re hearing from our community. If you are visiting the centre, please feel free to speak to the staff at our Customer Service desk with any additional questions you may have.

 

Q. Will it be safe to visit the marketplace on opening day?

Our staff will be temporarily limiting entry to The Marketplace via the north-west doors (near Woolworths on the Melton Highway) and carefully managing the number of people inside at one time in keeping with social distancing guidelines in place while you wait.

To ensure the safety of customers, retailers and staff at this time, we have also employed additional security resources at the centre, including extra presence from Victoria Police and security guards.

We ask for your support in making sure everyone enjoys safe and respectful access to what they need at The Marketplace and thank you in advance for your patience should wait times be longer than normal.

Please be assured that significant infection-prevention measures are being taken to safeguard your health in line with the latest directives from the Australian Government and relevant authorities.

Q. Why is your centre still open when the Government has banned internal gatherings of 100 people or more?

The Australian Government’s recent advice on mass gatherings and closures excludes shopping centres, which is why Watergardens remains open and trading, except for those retailers mandated to temporarily close by the Government, including:

•            Pubs, registered and licenced clubs (excluding bottle shops attached to these venues)

•            Cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos, and night clubs

•            Restaurants and cafes, including the new ones opening in The Marketplace, will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery services only (a full list of takeaway options can be found here: )

Social distancing in public

To reduce the spread of germs:

  • Sanitise your hands wherever possible, including entering and leaving buildings
  • Use tap-and-pay methods rather than handling money
  • Try to visit the centre at quiet times to avoid crowds.

Please be assured that we are closely monitoring updates from the Australian Government Department of Health and other relevant health authorities in relation to COVID-19 and are prepared to act in line with State and Federal Government mandates, as necessary, as the situation develops.

Q. What additional precautionary safety measures are in place at the centre?

We are aligning our response with advice from the relevant health and governing authorities, including the Australian Government Department of Health. We are also working with specialist health and safety consultants to ensure the safety of our customers and staff during this period.

We have strengthened our already stringent cleaning processes, placing a heightened focus on sanitising high touch points (handrails, door handles, lift buttons etc) with high-grade disinfectant, as well as increasing the number of cleaning rotations during each day.

We have positioned hand sanitation stations at key points throughout the centre for our entire community to utilise. 

We have adjusted air-conditioning systems to maximise the intake of fresh air, ensuring a high-level of air quality.

Q. Why are you making visitors line up to enter The Marketplace?

We take the safety of our customers, staff, and retailers very seriously and have implemented these entry conditions to assist with offering a safe and fair system for the community to access the new stores. This means that we must limit the number of people entering the new ALDI and Marketplace stores at one time.

We have been guided by the Victorian Police and an expert security consult in developing  this system. We sincerely thank you for your understanding and patience as we all adjust to these new precautions that help keep our centre safe during this challenging time.

 

Q. Why is there only one entry point into The Marketplace and why are all other entries are closed?

Guided by the advice of security consultants and Victoria Police we have developed a plan that aims to provide fair and safe access to ALDI and The Marketplace stores.

To allow for social distancing and to ensure the safety of our customers, retailers and staff, we are limiting the number of people in The Marketplace at any one time.

We continue to encourage all members of our community to show patience and respect for staff and fellow community members, and to conduct their shopping in a safe and fair manner.

 

Q. I would like to attend The Marketplace during opening weekend. What do I need to know? And how can I find out more?

To avoid overcrowding and allow for the social distancing we will closely monitor patronage of The Marketplace during peak and off-peak periods.

Controlled entry into the precinct will remain in place until such a time as deemed necessary by Centre Management.
